Top-Flight Updates: Hannibal Banned for Misconduct; Guardiola Says 'Back Line Has to Improve'
From the world of Premier League developments, a key player was issued a substantial ban, a manager has pointed to a defender's mistakes to make an argument, and Pep Guardiola has called for backline betterment following a chaotic win.
1. Mejbri Given Four-Match Suspension and Financial Penalty
Burnley's player Hannibal Mejbri has been given a four-match suspension and a financial fine for misconduct during a recent fixture versus Leeds United. The Football Association said the player was referred an independent regulatory commission after an incident of spitting towards away fans around the 67th mark of a 2-0 victory for Burnley.
A release said: “An independent Regulatory Commission has sanctioned the Hannibal Mejbri for his actions in their Premier League match against Leeds of 18 October. The charge was that the player acted in breach of the laws of football and/or in an improper way by engaging in abusive and/or indecent behaviour by spitting at or in the direction of Leeds United supporters.”
It added, “Mejbri later accepted the charge, and the Regulatory Commission imposed a four-game ban and a fine after proceedings. The panel's full explanation for its decisions will be published in due course.” The team, now 19th in the Premier League standings, visit 12th-placed Newcastle on Saturday.
2. Maresca Points to Tosin's Errors to Prove a Point
The Blues' head coach Enzo Maresca has argued that a lack of experience is not a problem for his club, pointing out how centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo's age did not prevent him from playing a bad game in a 3-1 loss to Leeds United.
The Italian coach, who oversees the most youthful squad in the Premier League, does not feel that mentality was a factor in their poor result. He made his case by singling out Tosin, the most experienced player on the pitch, who delivered an error-strewn display in central defence.
“People always mention a lack of experience after we drop points,” the coach stated. “After we defeated Barcelona, the draw with Arsenal, no one was talking about older players. I know that if we don’t win, people are always searching for an explanation, but I think why we lost against Leeds was not down to the experience, it was because we just weren't good enough.”
Maresca continued, “Who was the oldest one for us in the match? It was Tosin. Did he play good? So, it’s not about experience. It's that those 11 players, they were not up to standard.”
3. Guardiola Insists Defence 'Must Get Better'
The Manchester City manager has insisted his team have learnt from a midweek scare at Fulham with the episode is now forgotten. City held on for a 5-4 win during a remarkable clash on Tuesday, having led 5-1 with about an hour played.
Coming after they fought off a Leeds fightback to win 3-2 in their previous game, it raised more questions about if they are the defensive steel required to sustain a title challenge against pace-setters Arsenal. “It’s behind us,” he said. “Valuable learnings, I hope. In the Premier League, at all the clubs, you have to take onboard what happens in the good things and bad things and focus on what's next.”
“Of course I am worried,” he admitted. “We are trying to analyse the cause, so as not to allow so many goals. After conceding three against Leeds, and the five goals against Fulham you can see the two versions, correct? So, always we have done plenty of good things. But the number of attempts did Leeds have? Three? They scored two. It’s not bad. How many shots on target did Fulham have? Five, six? So, our ratio of chances conceded we can see is high. We must be better.”
4. Newcastle Focus New Defenders' Contracts
The Magpies' new football chief, Ross Wilson, has placed contract discussions with key backline players Tino Livramento and Sven Botman at the top of his agenda for the club. He joined from Nottingham Forest recently and is reassured to learn playmaker Sandro Tonali has a contract extending to 2029 with an option until 2030.
This allows Wilson to prioritise talks for Livramento and Botman's representatives. With the former’s current deal ending in 2027 and Botman's in 2028, the club's talks have assumed some urgency.
“The initial three or four days in the job is when I found that Sandro’s contract situation is much better than I was expecting,” he stated. “However, it is well known that we would want to renew Tino’s contract and also wants to extend Sven Botman’s too. Those discussions are underway.”
Head coach Eddie Howe is without Botman against the home game against Burnley on Saturday, with the defender likely to be out for a further period.
5. Nuno Confirms Paquetá Returns for West Ham
The Hammers' head coach Nuno Espírito Santo has stated that Lucas Paquetá will return to the starting lineup for the side play Brighton on Sunday, having completed his suspension following a red card against Liverpool.
“That incident is behind us,” Nuno said. “I am confident it won't be repeated because he himself acknowledged the error. We discussed it in the dressing room. I am positive it is over and it will not happen again.”
Nuno also understands the significant strain on his side, currently 18th before the weekend fixtures. “We cannot avoid it,” he said. “It is a reality. We must confront it. We are fighting for survival. We cannot shy away from it.”
Arteta Pleased with Striker Stand-in Merino
Mikel Merino could continue leading the line for Arsenal central striker even when their regular strikers are fit again. Merino has been deployed as a makeshift No 9 due to injuries to Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
He scored Arsenal’s first goal against Brentford before assisting Bukayo Saka for the second during a 2-0 win which preserved {their|
